Nourishing and delicious food. Wine richly expressive of its terroir.
This is our recipe: being good to the earth, to animals and to people.
We source as many ingredients as possible from our farm and from friends of Spier: the local, small-scale suppliers who share our ethical ethos. The fruit, veg and herbs in our gardens grow without artificial fertiliser or pesticides. Our happy cows, pigs and chickens are reared on our certified organic pastures without growth hormones or routine antibiotics.
The quality of our wines begins in the vineyard. Each site is carefully chosen to ensure a perfect match between terroir and varietal, and lovingly stewarded to ensure an optimal harvest, year after year.

SPIER FARM CAFé
Chef Hennie is not a fan of fancy, fussy cooking. “The secret to a great meal is honest and unpretentious food made with the best quality ingredients,” he says. Farmer Angus supplies meat and eggs from our organically certified pastures. Chef Hennie also uses as much fresh produce as possible from Spier’s new food gardens. The result? Nourishing and delicious dishes that you’ll want to order again and again.
Cellar Master Frans Smit
Frans Smit has harnessed more than three centuries of winemaking tradition to transform Spier into a top award-winning wine producer. ‘Respect what the vineyard hands you’ is our Cellar Master’s mantra. Having grown up on a grape farm in the Northern Cape, becoming master of the barrel was the next logical step. Frans is a member of the esteemed Cape Winemakers Guild.
The steward of Spier’s certified organic farm is Farmer Angus. His delicious meat comes from cows, pigs and broiler chickens who are reared on our pastures without hormones or routine antibiotics. His eggs are laid by our farm’s happy, outdoor-roaming hens. The meat is prepared on the farm at Farmer Angus’s butchery, the only one in the country that does not add nitrates, gluten and nitrites to the meat.
VADAS SMOKEHOUSE & BAKERY
PJ Vadas believes that a healthy food starts with a healthy planet, which is why he chooses his suppliers with such great care. From heart-healthy, organic whole grains and stone ground flour, to the freshest seasonal produce and pasture-reared meats direct from the Spier farm, his commitment to top-notch, ethically sourced local ingredients means that healthy eating has never been this delicious.
Megan's Veggie Garden
Megan McCarthy is mentoring 13 people from communities near Spier in how to grow their own food. In demonstration gardens at Spier, they’re harvesting delicious fruit, veg and herbs that are used in our kitchens, sold to the public and donated to the community. Megan’s regenerative, earth-friendly approach means that no artificial fertilisers or pesticides are used. Soon we will be selling veggies here.
Spier is home to a diverse bunch of passionate people, doing what they love, and committed to making a difference every day. The green fingered nursery manager Wilton Sikhosana grew up in Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal, and has worked at Spier for the past decade. Together, he and his team have grown and planted millions of indigenous plants on the farm. Soon we'll be adding plants from the Spier Nursery!
